I will definitely be reading future books in this series. I loved the characters, loved the plot, loved the action, and loved the guns. If you don't like weaponry and don't like reading about that this may not be the book for you.because a lot of words are spent describing weaponry. I like reading about guns, so for the most part, this didn't bother me. Correia definitely knows his guns and this is apparent throughout the book. The other thing is the detail put into the description of the weaponry. That being said it does have very strong female leads as well and Owen does have a love interest throughout. This didn't bother me, but it definitely gives the book a male flavor (as opposed to many urban fantasies out there that are targeted at women). There is posturing between the men and stupid things done to impress the ladies. This book is told from Owen's perspective so at times it gets kind of macho. There are a couple things to note about this book that set it apart from other urban fantasies/horror. I loved how the plot tied everything together and was happy with how the book wrapped up. It starts with Owen's training (which I love since I believe heroes need to learn how to fight the bad guys from somehwere), goes on to individual hunts, and then ties in to a huge plot that is bigger than this world alone. The action scenes are very well done and make it easy to picture what is happening. The plot moves at a fast clip and there are a ton of action scenes. The same can be said for the rest of the characters they are complex, intriguing, and wonderful to read about. He comes off as kind of sweet at some points, and very intelligent. Owen is a huge, dangerous man yet somehow he is very human and easy to relate too. All of them have some brutality in their pasts and it makes for interesting issues. are not humanized in this book.they are monsters right out of an old horror story. This book is probably more of a horror than an urban fantasy although it could belong to either genre. The plot is crazy fast and keeps you guessing. There are also some amazingly intricate characters there is not a boring character in this whole book. There is a lot of humor in it and it had me laughing out loud a number of times. When Owen agrees to sign up with MHI he is in for more crazy monster action than he ever imagined. The pay is awesome, the guns kick-ass, and the job.well it's just a bit dangerous is all. They were impressed with his tenacity in beating down that werewolf and want him to join their ranks. Owen is recruited by Monster Hunters International (MHI). Owen is pretty beat up and when he wakes up in the hospital he is in for more than he ever imagined. Well Owen beats the werewolf a bit and pushes it out a window to its death.bare-handed. Owen is an accountant when his boss turns into a werewolf and attacks him. Show More a bit more horror than urban fantasy and lots of guns. But I'd probably recommend Glen Cook's The Black Company over this book, to be honest. Recommended for people who love guns and action. It just didn't work for me personally because of all the emphasis on the action without regards for other aspects of the novel. But I can see why people gave it such high ratings. Two stars because I just didn't really like the book. A ton~ of action, a cheesy romance, little character development, and even more explosions. This book reads more like a B-rated action movie. The elves, in particular, were fantastic to read about. I did enjoy seeing the different supernatural creatures. I just wish Correia put more of that fun into it. The idea of a stripper, a librarian, an accountant, and a teacher going off to kill monsters if fun. Also, for a specific plot point that annoyed me, the idea that the tribute had to be a Monster Hunter because they needed a "hero" is a clear contradiction. Too many "prophecies" and strange unknown powers that somehow tell Pitt where the plot should go next. I call bull.Īnd can I just say how ridiculous it is for the Julie's boyfriend to actually turn out to be a wimp? There was no redeeming factor in that character besides a strawman obstacle for Pitt's romance life. No freaking way when you drop a pick-up line the first time you meet. But instead we get fed a lot of crap lines about how Julie was the perfect girl for Pitt. It was a little too obvious that the entire relationship was based on how bang-able the girl was rather than any notion of a real romance. I thought the author's insistence on soul-mates-at-first-sight and love was ridiculously dumb. Oh, look, I just basically told you the entire story. Show More (usually I like them better then female ones because it doesn't get as stupid sappy), but this book was just dripping with testosterone.
